Geography

At Tickhill St. Mary’s C of E Primary and Nursery School, we aim to enable pupils to become confident, skilled learners who enjoy and engage deeply with their education. Our Geography curriculum plays a vital role in this, enriching pupils’ understanding of the world and enhancing their enthusiasm for learning.

Our curriculum offer at Tickhill St. Mary’s is firmly rooted in our Core Values, which provide the foundation for all learning experiences, including Geography:

Resilient
We encourage pupils to develop and embed their geographical skills through a wide range of activities, fostering perseverance and determination.

Curious
Pupils are supported to approach Geography with a keen and inquisitive attitude, eager to learn new skills and apply them thoughtfully in their work. We nurture a desire to achieve both individually and collaboratively, motivating children to push their own boundaries.

Active Members of the Community
From Year 3 onwards, pupils have opportunities to attend residential visits that broaden their geographical experiences. Children are actively encouraged to develop experiential knowledge of their local community as well as places further afield, fostering a strong sense of belonging and connection.

Respectful
Our Geography curriculum promotes respect for diverse countries, cultures, and perspectives. Pupils learn to respect themselves and others during collaborative learning and when exploring new geographical concepts.

Accountable
We empower pupils to develop confident geographical skills that they can apply independently. Our carefully planned curriculum offers opportunities to explore a variety of places, ensuring meaningful and purposeful learning.

Beyond the Subject
Through Geography, we aim to help children:

  • Develop a genuine enjoyment and curiosity for the subject.

  • Build confidence in acquiring and applying geographical skills.

  • Engage actively with different geographical sites and environments.

  • Lead healthy, active lives with an awareness of their place in the world.

This curriculum is designed to ensure that pupils know more, remember more, and can do more, preparing them to thrive both now and in the future, fully embodying our school’s vision of ‘life in all its fullness’ (John 10:10).
