History

At St Mary’s, we deliver History through an experiential, hands-on approach that brings learning to life. Our curriculum is thoughtfully structured around the Golden Threads of History, which represent the key ideas and concepts that children will revisit and deepen throughout their journey at St Mary’s and into Key Stage 3.

Our History Curriculum is Rooted in Our Core Values

Resilient

  • Demonstrate courage by asking and answering thoughtful historical questions.

  • Embrace the complexity of history, understanding that there are multiple perspectives, and confidently form and justify personal viewpoints.

Curious

  • Approach historical learning with enthusiasm, applying skills to new contexts and experiences.

  • Seek out new knowledge that challenges existing ideas and deepens understanding of how past events shape our present and future.

Active Members of the Community

  • Engage with the local community of Tickhill and its surroundings by exploring historical changes and learning directly from parish members about life in the past.

  • Participate in annual remembrance services and parish events, strengthening our connection to community history.

Respectful

  • Honour the actions and decisions of people in the past.

  • Appreciate the legacy and freedoms we enjoy today as a result of historical events.

  • Respect diverse perspectives and interpretations of history.

Accountable

  • Develop into confident historians who think independently and critically.

  • Handle artefacts and historical sources with care and respect.

Beyond the Subject: The Wider Impact of Our History Curriculum

Our History curriculum aims to:

  • Enhance children’s historical skills, concepts, knowledge, and attitudes.

  • Foster a deeper understanding of the present through the lens of the past.

  • Cultivate enquiry, analysis, evaluation, and argumentation skills.

  • Ignite curiosity and motivation to explore history further.

  • Support the development of personal and collective identity through historical learning.

  • Appreciate the things that we should now be thankful for, because of the actions of people in the past.

  • Respect the views of others.
