Design and Technology
At Tickhill St. Mary’s C of E Primary and Nursery School we aim to enable pupils to become confident and skilled. Our Design and Technology curriculum contributes to this, enabling pupils to enhance their enjoyment.
Principles of Design and Technology are taught through the ‘big ideas’ as detailed below:

Our Core Values provide the foundation on which we have built our curriculum offer at Tickhill St. Mary’s. Our DT curriculum is underpinned by these Core Values through:
Being Resilient
-
Children have the opportunity to explore their ideas and record their experiences.
-
They demonstrate resilience and perseverance by continually evaluating and improving their work.
Being Curious
-
Children are encouraged to explore their ideas, reflect on them, and then develop and evolve these ideas.
-
Their interest and curiosity about design are fostered through a series of lessons that provide progression in both skills and knowledge.
-
Children are given opportunities to ask questions and demonstrate their skills in a variety of ways.
Being Active Members of Our Community
-
Our DT curriculum is enriched through links with the local faith community and St Mary’s Parish Church, including participation in services and events.
-
This can include local community art competitions, national competitions, and collaborations with local artists.
Being Respectful
-
Children develop their knowledge of famous artists, designers, chefs, and craft makers.
-
They explore the work of others and evaluate different creative ideas respectfully.
Being Accountable
-
Children produce creative and imaginative work.
-
They become confident and proficient in a variety of techniques, including planning, making, and evaluating their designs.
Beyond the Subject
At St Mary’s, we believe a quality DT curriculum should nurture children’s enjoyment of the skills and knowledge involved in planning, making, and evaluating. Through DT, children enhance their enquiry skills and curiosity about the world around them as they plan, design, and evaluate their creations. They become more confident in analysing their own work and expressing opinions about their own and others’ creations. This equips our children with the tools they need to participate fully and thoughtfully as members of society.
