Welcome to our Y6 Class Page
Welcome to our Spring 1 term - can't believe the school year is going by so quickly! We have completed our history and geography units "The Amazing Americas" and now we are moving on to our science topic "What's it like inside me?". We shall be identifying the main parts of the human circulatory system and describe the functions of the heart and blood vessels, to help us we shall have a hands-on activity dissecting a pig heart (the nearest to our human heart) in the classroom, we shall provide gloves and aprons. We shall also look at the impact of diet, drugs, exercise and lifestyle on the way our body functions and design our own scientific experiment to measure exercise on our heart rate. The third part of our unit is to look at the ways in which nutrients and water are transported within animals, including humans. We shall also learn some basic first aid.
In English we shall be reading "Pig Heart Boy" by Mallorie Blackman, a powerful and thought provoking read which will help us develop our oracy skills as we debate a number of issues and write a piece of discursive text. In reading we shall use the same book to continue our VIPERS ( details of VIPERS are on our class page).
We shall start a new French unit - Let's go Shopping, we will learn about the shopping experience in France. Children will learn how to use prepositional language and key phrases for asking the questions needed when going shopping. We hope to do some role play, where children will take on the roles of shoppers and shopkeepers. In PE we continue dance and start a rugby unit. This term in R.E. we will be digging deeper as we consider God.
Spellings will be given on a Monday and we learn them together in class over the week, the children have a choice to bring them home if they wish to, I shall be sending a copy of the Y5 & 6 statutory spelling lists home..
Homework will be given on a Friday and due in the following Thursday, we will mark together so we can learn from it.
We hope to do PE on Monday and Thursday - please ensure PE kits (indoor and outdoor) are in school all week as other opportunities may arise.
