Y6 Curriculum Plan

Hello and welcome back to St Mary's as we start our Autumn term 2021.  I do hope you have all had a lovely Summer break and been able to enjoy some sunshine in the outdoors. We enjoyed two lovely transition days before the end of term (see the photos below), we played silly games (involving water!)laugh and learned about why the Ancient Maya wore masks, using this knowledge we then created our own masks.  We thought about our hopes and dreams for the future and what we enjoy now, we then created some artwork for a display.  We have also made a time capsule which we shall be burying in the school grounds, we will dig it up next Summer and see if we have changed from our photos and in our aspirations. 

 

As we return to school our focus, for the first few days, will be on a book by Rob Sanders called "Pride".  It is the story of Harvey Milk and the rainbow flag, the book tells a history that all children will cherish and that will inspire the next generation of hope-givers, our world's youth.  We shall also focus on the art of Grayson Perry and we will be designing our own plates in his artistic style - based on his theme of identity (which fits well with the work we did on the transition days). wink

 

This half term we are asking the question "Why are the Americas amazing?" It is history based on the Ancient Maya civilisation. We shall focus on our history skills and our learning shall include  finding out about beliefs, behaviour and characteristics of people, recognising that not everyone shares the same views and feelings. We will learn how to weave like an Ancient Mayan and create a Mola.

 

In English we shall be reading "Journey to the River Sea" by Eva Ibbotson and building on our VIPERS skills (see below) to help our fluency and understanding. In writing we are going to write an effective setting (linked to the South American rainforest of the Ancient Maya). 

Spellings will be given on a Monday and we learn them together in class over the week, the children have a choice to bring them home if they wish to, I shall be sending a copy of the Y5 & 6 statutory spelling lists home.

We shall begin with number and place value in maths. 

In French we shall build on our previous learning and look at time. 

In RE we will be wondering about creation versus science - an interesting topic which offers much material for discussion and debate. 

Homework will be given on a Friday and due in the following Wednesday, we will mark together so we can learn from it.

We hope to do PE on Monday and Thursday - please ensure PE kits (indoor and outdoor) are in school all week as other opportunities may arise.  angel
