Y5 Scarbrough

Summer Term 2021

I hope you have all had a very hoppy Easter, and are ready to come back to school for a really exciting term.

We will be travelling back in time to the land of the Ancient Egyptians this term. On Tuesday 13th April we will launch our topic with an amazing Egyptian Day during which we will get to grips with Egyptian artefacts, play Egyptian games and of course, witness a real life mummification. smiley

Our Science topic this term is Materials, and will be taught by Mrs Allen on a Monday afternoon. She has loads of interesting experiments ready for you to tackle.

As we missed our Circle of Life science topic, we will also be touching on this later in the term. (I was not going to miss the opportunity to hatch butterflies!)

PE for Scarbrough class is on Mondays and Fridays. Please make sure you have both outdoor and indoor kits in school every week.

We look forward to a more normal summer term. ( However, it is currently snowing ... so who knows!! )

Hello again Home Learners. Hope you all enjoyed the snow! Thank you to those who sent me pictures - I will try and add them to our webpage tomorrow.

I look forward to seeing you all again on Teams at 11.30. (also any random dogs, cats, parents and siblings who happen to be joining us as well! wink)

Maths is a bit different this week - we are giving Mr Whitehead a week off while we practice what he has been teaching us.

Worksheets for each day will be in 'ASSIGNMENTS' on Teams (I can show you on Monday). I will also email them to parents. Hopefully I will link them below as well.

Don't forget to keep sending me some of your work. I need to know that you are working hard.

Still missing you all.

Hello to all my little lockdown learners. I have been really impressed by the work that some of you have emailed to me. Please keep it coming - it's great to see how you are getting along.

I am hoping to start our Microsoft Teams meetings on Monday at 11.30. You should have been sent details of your email address and login details. Let me know if you haven't.

Art – Peter Thorpe

Draw a simple pencil sketch of a space rocket, then add a corner of sun at the top of your paper in yellow. Continue using your yellow – think about where the light will be shining on the rocket – shade the edges with yellow. The rest of the rocket would be in darkness, so you can add pencil shading to darken it.

Please send me a pic of your sunlit rocket.

Remote Learning

Following school closures, we have decided to make the children’s learning experience streamlined and as simplistic as possible. Therefore we will ensure that we upload content ready for Monday mornings. The Government advice is that primary schools should have approximately three hours of work per day. With this in mind, St Mary’s will concentrate on at least three areas of study per day which will vary from year group to year group and may change each week.

The work will begin from tomorrow.

To supplement your child’s learning, we will be offering CGP books at a significantly discounted price which the office will need to know by Friday the 8th January. These books have been handpicked by the teachers in order to best support the needs of the children. These are available via the school office.

Books for Year 5

Science Topic Book - Space      (codeS5C22)   £1.25

Y5 SPaG Book                         (code E5W22) £3.60

In addition, in Year Five we will be reading George's Secret Key to the Universe by Stephen Hawking. You might like to buy this book and read it with your child as it links perfectly with our space topic.

Should you have any further questions or concerns, please contact your class teacher through their regular Gmail address.

smiley   Welcome to Year Five  smiley

I hope you have managed to have a relaxing summer holiday and are ready to return to school refreshed and raring to go. Year 5 is a busy and exciting place to be. Fascinating topics, new experiences, challenges and opportunities await.

This year, Y5 will be supported by Miss Read, Mrs Over and Mrs Houghton.

Swimming lessons will take place on Wednesday afternoons. Children need to bring swimming kit and a towel in a suitable bag each week please. Children who use an inhaler MUST ensure this is in school on swimming days.

Homework will be set on a Friday to be returned the following Wednesday. Please encourage your child to complete this independently wherever possible and to seek help if required.

I’m looking forward to a brand new year. See you all soon.

If parents need to contact me, please use   tickhillscarbrough@gmail.com      It would be useful for me to have a full set of parent emails, so if you could send me a quick message that would be great.
