Welcome to our Year 4 class page
I hope you all had a restful break, We are now in our Summer 2 term. We have an exciting and busy term to look forward to.
Our topic this term is science based and we will be learning all about the digestive system. We have our exciting residential trip to Castleton and of course, sports day.
Our class reading text this half term is Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. We will continue to develop our reading comprehension skills using VIPERS - I have placed details of this on our page, please scroll down to read more and use to help your child. In R.E. we will be thinking about which is the best way for Jewish people to show commitment to God. In DT, we will be learning cooking and nutrition. This half term we have French and we are thinking about French speaking countries across the world. Our PE lessons will focus on being healthy and we will do athletics. Please ensure P.E. kits are kept in school all half term, including outdoor trainers, as we may have other opportunities.
Homework will be given on Friday and collected the following Friday. We often mark together in class so the children can learn from what they have done. Please do not stress over homework, if your child is struggling please come and talk to me.
We have a very busy and exciting half term planned, should you at any time need to discuss anything please do contact me and we could meet after school, alternatively please leave a message on the class e-mail account or with the school office.

What is Vipers?
VIPERS is an acronym to aid the recall of the 6 reading domains as part of the UK’s reading curriculum. They are the key areas which we feel children need to know and understand in order to improve their comprehension of texts.
VIPERS stands for
Vocabulary
Inference
Prediction
Explanation
Retrieval
Sequence or Summarise
The 6 domains focus on the comprehension aspect of reading and not the mechanics: decoding, fluency, prosody etc.
British Science Week
This year in British Science Week Year 4 looked at the effect of particle size. In this activity, we explored how different-sized particles interact with our respiratory system, using a fun, hands-on model to simulate how we breathe in and filter the air around us. Have a look at the photos below.
If you would like to know more or try some science at home have a look at:
Anglo Saxon honey shortbread
I know many of us enjoyed making - and eating- this shortbread on our Anglo Saxon launch day and have since requested the recipe:
Ingredients:
225g plain flour
50g corn flour
175g soft butter
125g honey
Method:
Put all the ingredients in a bowl
Mix them together
Mix well, until you have a dough
Place in a round tin and flatten
Score runes across (or any pattern)
Bake in the oven for 30 mins at 130 degrees celsius
Remove when golden brown, cool and enjoy!
