Y6 Foljambe

smileyWelcome to our Y6 class pagesmiley

I hope everyone had a lovely summer and enjoyed all the sunshine.

We start our new year with many exciting activities. We have a trip to the Houses of Parliament, a secondary school taster day, a Mayan history experience day andwe are also going to Crucial Crew.  We will meet our Reception buddies and begin to show them the St Mary's way - we are going to take them pumpkin picking!

Our topic for the first half term is history based - Why are the Americas amazing? We will be learning all about the Mayans c AD 900, a non-European society that provides a contrast with British history. History helps us have a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world and helps pupils to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.  We will start our topic with an exciting Mayan experience day.

We are reading "Journey to the River Sea" by Eva Ibbotson - set in the early 1900s, orphan Maia goes to live in South America, faces unwelcoming relatives, and makes friends, this story explores themes of friendship and the natural world. We will focus on writing a setting including the use of speech and a non-chronological report.  I have attached some reading comprehension question stems below which you may find useful to help your child understand their reading at home.  The VIPERS question stems are based on the 6 domains of the national reading curriculum.

We continue our Mayan theme in art as we look at Mayan weaving and create our own pieces.  In music we are focusing on dynamics and listening to Mendelssohn's Piece "Fingal's Cave" and composing our own pieces to play on the recorder.  In RE we are considering the debate creation versus science - are they compatible?  This will build on much of our previous learning.  "It's Electrifying" is our theme in science as we continue our learning from year 4 on electricity.

Our P.E. will be on Friday but please have P.E. kits in school all week as we may have other opportunities.

Homework will be given on a Friday to be returned the following Friday when we will mark together so we can use it as a revision exercise. Please do not worry over homework, it is an opportunity to embed what we have been learning, if your child is struggling please ask them to come to talk to Mrs Illsley or myself and we can look at it together.

Should you have any concerns or questions please do not hesitate to ask, I am usually available after school or contact me on the class email: tickhillfoljambe@gmail.com, alternatively you could leave a message at the school office or speak to a member of the senior leaders team.
